Australian medical company Dr Jan’s Pharmaceuticals is forging a new path for natural therapies that is backed by clinical research to specifically target oxidative stress (free radicals).

Founded by Dr Jan Howes, a medical researcher with more than 35 years’ experience working with some of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical groups, the company has taken a focused approach to treating oxidative stress.

With the growing number of Neutraceuticals (natural therapies) entering the market, and the lack of evidence-based science behind many of these products, Dr Howes has taken on the challenge to produce only quality products that have good medicine and science behind them. Dr Howes has spent years in researching the area of oxidative stress. 

Over the last 50 years antioxidants have been the subject of thousands of publications in Medical Journals. Unlike other monomolecular (single source) antioxidant formulations, Dr Howes’ formulation contains a unique combination of potent complementary antioxidants, the benefits of which are greater than the sum of their parts. 

Dr Howes’ interest in natural therapies stems from disquiet over the many claims by manufacturers of health benefits that are not based on science.

“There were a lot of natural therapies coming onto the market that concerned me,” says Dr Howes, a Bachelor of Applied Science graduate who spent many years working in hospital laboratories as a senior scientist and haematologist.

That led her to undertake a PhD at UNSW looking into the benefits of natural therapies compared with traditional medicine.

“Since completing my PhD, I have been looking at formulations of natural therapies and whether or not they work. What has been exciting is seeing the results our products have had during clinical trials and the potential to use this unique therapy to treat serious diseases caused by oxidative stress”.

Dr Jan’s Pharmaceuticals is taking on the might of larger pharmaceutical companies with a clinical approach to its product suite which currently comprises Heart Health (Cardiovascular disease linked to oxidative stress) and Liver Health (Liver toxicity caused by oxidative stress).
